Matt Riddle Teases MMA Comeback in 2024

Matt Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA in 2024

Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestling star Matt Riddle has hinted at a potential return to mixed martial arts (MMA) in the year 2024. At 37, Riddle is exploring opportunities that could see him back in competitive fighting, either in the ring or the cage.

Riddle's discussions with various organizations have been discreet, though he has yet to divulge specifics about any deals. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that there might be interest from bare-knuckle fighting promotions and the Professional Fighters League (PFL), indicating a wide array of options for the versatile athlete.

The last time fans saw Riddle in an MMA bout was in February 2014 when he faced Michael Kuiper at Titan FC. Prior to that, Riddle had a stint in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he left on a high note with a four-win streak after defeating Che Mills in 2013. However, two of those victories were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, which led to controversy and criticism from UFC President Dana White.

Despite the rocky end to his UFC career, Riddle transitioned into professional wrestling, beginning his training in 2014 and making his debut the following year. His natural charisma and athletic prowess quickly propelled him through various independent circuits where he claimed several titles, showcasing his versatility as a performer.

Riddle's Wrestling Accolades

In 2018, Riddle's career took a significant turn when he joined WWE NXT, capturing the NXT Tag Team Championship with partner Pete Dunne. This success was a precursor to his move to the main roster, where he continued his winning ways by securing the United States Championship in February 2021.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Riddle then formed a popular tag team known as "RK-Bro" with veteran wrestler Randy Orton. Together, they achieved considerable success, becoming two-time Raw Tag Team Champions. Riddle's dedication to combat sports extends beyond the squared circle; he continues to practice martial arts multiple times a week and holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Recently, Riddle was spotted at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, signaling his ongoing interest in combat sports outside of the wrestling realm.

Riddle Reflects on His Past and Future

In conversations with MMA Junkie, Riddle expressed his contemplation about a return to fighting. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," he said. "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon."

Reflecting on his departure from the UFC, Riddle acknowledges the impact Dana White's public criticism had on his career trajectory. "I have to thank Dana because if he were just to fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," Riddle remarked. He believes that this incident helped shape the relatable 'bro' character that has resonated with many fans.

Despite the acrimonious split with the UFC, Riddle holds no ill will and remains open to future opportunities. "I never say never," he stated. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge."

Riddle looks back at his combat sports journey with a sense of unfinished business. "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he explained. His passion for competition still burns brightly as he contemplates his next steps. "Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"

As a free agent, Riddle's future holds numerous possibilities. Whether he returns to the octagon, tries his hand at bare-knuckle fighting, or continues to dominate the wrestling world, one thing is certain: Matt Riddle's competitive spirit is as strong as ever. Fans will eagerly await the next chapter in the career of this multifaceted athlete.
