PWHL Awards and Recognitions

Awards and Recognitions

The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) has concluded its latest season, celebrating outstanding performances and remarkable stories. The standout among them is Toronto’s Natalie Spooner, named both the PWHL MVP and Forward of the Year.

Spooner's Scoring Supremacy

Spooner led the league in scoring with an impressive 20 goals and seven assists. In doing so, she outperformed notable players like New York's Alex Carpenter and Montreal's Marie-Philip Poulin. This achievement is even more remarkable considering the personal challenges Spooner faced leading up to this season.

Natalie Spooner gave birth to her son at the end of 2022 and did not skate for six months leading up to the new season. Despite these obstacles, she returned to the ice and delivered a performance that exceeded all expectations. Spooner also suffered a knee injury during the playoff semifinals, which makes her accomplishments this season even more noteworthy. "I probably wouldn't have thought that it would have gone this way," Spooner admitted, reflecting on her journey back to professional hockey. "I think I was just super grateful to be playing again, to be back on the team. I was just really excited to get back out there with the girls, but I never thought that I'd be able to have, I guess, as big of an impact as I was able to have with the team."

Coaching Mastery and Team Success

Toronto's success this season can also be attributed to the strategic prowess of their head coach, Troy Ryan, who was named Coach of the Year. Under Ryan’s guidance, Toronto achieved a league-high of 47 points during the regular season and enjoyed an 11-game win streak. Ryan’s leadership has been instrumental in fostering a winning culture and a cohesive team dynamic.

Outstanding Performances Across the League

Other notable award recipients include Kristen Campbell, who was named Goaltender of the Year after an outstanding season with 16 wins and three shutouts. Campbell's stellar performance in the net was a critical factor in her team’s success.

The Defender of the Year award went to Montreal’s Erin Ambrose, who accumulated 18 points over 24 games. Ambrose’s ability to contribute offensively while maintaining strong defensive play made her a standout player this season.

Minnesota’s Grace Zumwinkle earned the title of Rookie of the Year, recording 19 points in 24 games. Zumwinkle’s immediate impact on the ice made her a valuable asset to her team and an exciting player to watch in future seasons.

The Hockey For All Award

Maureen Murphy was honored with the Hockey For All Award in recognition of her exceptional volunteer work. This award highlights the importance of community service and the positive influence players can have off the ice.

Selection Process

The winners of these prestigious awards were chosen by an 18-member selection committee, ensuring a thorough and considered evaluation of each candidate’s contributions throughout the season.

As the PWHL celebrates these achievements, the league continues to grow and showcase the incredible talent and dedication of its players, coaches, and community members. The stories of resilience, leadership, and excellence exemplified by this year's award winners serve as an inspiration for fans and aspiring athletes alike.
