Columbus Blue Jackets Honor Memory of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau in 2024-25 NHL Season

The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced plans to honor the memories of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau throughout the 2024-25 NHL season, following their tragic loss in a bicycle accident last month. The two brothers, who were deeply enmeshed in the hockey world, will be remembered in various heartfelt ways by the organization.

Helmet Stickers to Bear Gaudreau Name

Starting with their first preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres on September 23, the Blue Jackets players will don special helmet stickers. These blue stickers with gray trim will feature the name "GAUDREAU" encasing two doves, symbolizing peace, between the numbers 13 and 21. Johnny Gaudreau, an NHL star, wore the number 13, while his brother Matthew, who played at Boston College, wore the number 21.

This act of memorial will extend through the entire season, showcasing the organization's enduring respect and love for the Gaudreau family.

Tribute at Home Preseason Opener

On September 25, before their first home preseason game against the St. Louis Blues, the Blue Jackets will hold a moment of silence for Johnny and Matthew. This gesture will allow fans, teammates, and the broader community to collectively honor the brothers’ shared legacy in the sport of hockey.

Foundation to Benefit from 50/50 Raffles

Further honoring their memory, the Blue Jackets will host a unique 50/50 raffle during all four of their home preseason games. Proceeds from these raffles will be directed to the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation, supporting causes and communities cherished by the Gaudreau family.

Season-Long Memorials

The Blue Jackets have also planned ongoing tributes throughout the regular season. The first regular season game against the Minnesota Wild is set for October 10. This game will mark the first time the team will wear a special patch bearing Johnny's number 13 on their jerseys, a tribute that will continue throughout the season.

Adding to the commemoration, fans attending the Blue Jackets' home opener against the Florida Panthers on October 15 will receive replicas of the No. 13 patch. This gesture ensures that the memory of Johnny Gaudreau remains central not just within the team but also among the fans and wider community.

Tragic Circumstances

Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were tragically struck by a drunk driver while riding their bicycles in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. The driver involved in the accident was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of death by auto.

The loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau has undoubtedly sent waves of sorrow throughout the hockey world. Yet, the acts of remembrance and charity planned by the Columbus Blue Jackets serve as a poignant reminder of the impact the brothers had on those around them. Through these tributes, their spirit and love for the game will continue to influence and inspire.
