Tyler Guyton: Dallas Cowboys' New Hope at Left Tackle
The Dallas Cowboys, a team steeped in tradition and legacy, might have unveiled their latest gem in Tyler Guyton, a first-round rookie left tackle who has been turning heads since his arrival. Drafted 29th overall, Guyton's ascent into the professional ranks has been marked by intelligence, confidence, and resilience.
Coming out of the University of Oklahoma, where he started 13 of his 14 collegiate games at right tackle, Guyton seamlessly transitioned to the left side of the line during training camp. His exceptional skill set was on full display, especially during a padded practice where he managed to stonewall the formidable Micah Parsons. Head Coach Mike McCarthy noted, "I thought he had some nice reps against Micah."
But it isn't just his performance on the field that's catching eyes. Guyton's immediate adaptation to the Cowboys' system has been nothing short of impressive. Dak Prescott, the team's star quarterback, was particularly struck by Guyton's quick learning and execution. "His intelligence and confidence for sure. It's showing on the field, too. The guy has picked up everything we have thrown at him... He comes back with the same mindset and does win it that time," Prescott remarked.
Guyton's off-field contributions have also made an impact. He participated in a team jeopardy night, showcasing his sharp mind. Prescott recalled, "The dude jumped up there and spelled it as fast without any hesitation as I have ever seen. Still mind blown to be honest with you."
From a personal perspective, Guyton has found mentorship in Tyler Smith, the Cowboys' left guard. Both players share Texas roots, and this connection has translated into a supportive relationship on the field. "He's helped me out a lot. He's like a big brother to me," Guyton said of Smith's guidance. Smith, too, is optimistic about Guyton's future, praising his athletic prowess. "It's not very often that you find a human being who measures how he does, 6-7, 330 and has light feet and can just move and just bully dudes," Smith said. "The sky truly is the limit for him and his development."
Guyton, with his unique blend of size, agility, and determination, is poised to fill the substantial shoes left by his predecessor, Tyron Smith. However, the rookie is focused on charting his own path. "He has to be Tyler Guyton. Doesn't really matter who played here before him... At the end of the day, you just need to be yourself and the best version of yourself," Prescott emphasized.
Despite facing a brief setback due to illness, which caused him to miss three consecutive practices, Guyton's resolve remained unshaken. He returned to practice in a limited capacity, expressing optimism about his recovery. "I'm feeling better, for sure. I'm just under the weather, working my way back now," he shared. His return came just in time as the Cowboys prepared for a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams, an opportunity for Guyton to further hone his skills and make a case for his starting role.
Beyond the gridiron, Guyton participates in team activities that foster camaraderie. During a rookie karaoke session, he performed "Mary Jane" by Rick James, choosing the song for its widespread appeal. "It's a song that everybody knows is groovy and that would work," Guyton said.
As the Cowboys gear up for a season filled with high expectations, Guyton's presence on the offensive line could be a pivotal factor. His blend of youthful exuberance and mature understanding of the game bodes well for Dallas. Whether it's his on-field blocks or his off-field trivia skills, Tyler Guyton is proving to be a valuable addition to the team, with a bright future ahead.
