Koloko Joins Lakers on Two-Way Deal
The Los Angeles Lakers have added a new dimension to their roster by signing free agent center Christian Koloko on a two-way contract. Standing at an imposing 7-foot-1, Koloko brings both potential and question marks to the Lakers' lineup.
Koloko, who was the No. 33 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors, is widely considered a developmental project. His rookie season, unfortunately, was marred by a blood clot issue, which sidelined him for the entirety of the campaign. Despite this setback, the Lakers' independent assessment of Koloko has been promising, indicating that the center could yet make a significant impact on the court.
In order to make room for Koloko, the Lakers waived forward Blake Hinson. This move opened up their third two-way slot, which Koloko now occupies alongside center Colin Castleton and forward Armel Traore. Notably, Traore, who stands at 6-foot-9, adds further depth and versatility to the Lakers' frontcourt options, albeit on a developmental contract.
The acquisition of Koloko could prove to be a strategic one for the Lakers. During his three seasons at the University of Arizona, Koloko demonstrated considerable promise, particularly in his final season where he averaged 12.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game. His standout defensive performances earned him the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year accolade, underscoring his potential value on the defensive end for the Lakers.
However, before Koloko can join the Lakers’ active roster, he must receive clearance from the NBA's "fitness-to-play panel." This panel, comprising an NBA-appointed doctor, a players union-appointed doctor, and a mutually agreed-upon third doctor, is tasked with assessing Koloko's readiness to return to professional basketball following his health issues. This is a crucial step, as his previous condition could pose risks if not properly managed.
Throughout his initial season with the Raptors, Koloko averaged 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks in 13.8 minutes per game. While these numbers may not leap off the page, they hint at his potential to develop into a reliable defensive presence. The Lakers' willingness to invest in Koloko's future is a testament to their belief in his ability to elevate his game and contribute meaningfully to the team.
Koloko's developmental trajectory will be closely monitored, particularly given the Lakers' high standards and championship aspirations. His progress could be pivotal, and if he manages to break through and earn a spot on the active roster, his contributions could have a notable impact on the Lakers' season.
By integrating Christian Koloko into their system, the Lakers are not just betting on his physical attributes, but also his potential to grow into a key player. The next steps for Koloko involve rigorous training and assessment, and if his health and skills align, he may soon be a name to watch in the league.
