As the Golden State Warriors embark on their 2023-24 NBA season, head coach Steve Kerr is tasked with establishing a consistent starting lineup for the team. Following a season marked by significant lineup changes and adjustments, Kerr is committed to creating a cohesive unit that balances both the starting lineup and the bench players effectively.
A Multitude of Questions Loom
One of the most pressing issues Kerr faces is filling the void at the shooting guard position, previously held by Klay Thompson. With Thompson's prolific 3-point shooting being a cornerstone of the Warriors' offense, finding a suitable replacement is imperative. Three notable contenders—Brandin Podziemski, De'Anthony Melton, and Buddy Hield—are vying for the starting role.
"The starting lineup is going to have to be dependent not only on the first five fitting but the second fitting as well," Kerr remarked. "We've got a lot of work to do to figure out lineups. All the guys can do is compete, play their ass off."
Center of Attention
The center position also remains a competitive battle, with Kevon Looney and Trayce Jackson-Davis both making strong cases for themselves during training camp. Additionally, the versatility of Kyle Anderson as a potential small-ball center gives Kerr another option to consider as he evaluates the best fit for the team.
Draymond Green's role remains secure, thanks to his veteran presence and defensive prowess. Meanwhile, Jonathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins are competing for a position in the frontcourt, adding another layer of complexity to the lineup decisions.
"There is competition across the board. It's not as simple as, 'Who is going to be the 2?' It's got to be -- 'Who is going to be the 5? Who's the 4?' We know that Steph is the 1. But what's the combination?" Kerr explained.
Charting a New Course
Stephen Curry, the team's undisputed starting point guard, is also keenly aware of the need for the team to integrate new players and strategies. Reflecting on the previous season, which saw the Warriors using 27 different starting lineups, Curry emphasized the importance of finding the right mix of players who can contribute effectively.
"You've got a guy who's a connector and can put the ball on the floor, create like BP, and obviously me and BP started a couple times last year," Curry noted. "You've got Buddy who can shoot, who spaces the floor, and is a veteran. We've got a lot of options."
The Long Ball Strategy
The Warriors have historically been one of the league's top 3-point shooting teams, ranking fourth in 3-point attempts last season. Kerr is determined to maintain that status, encouraging players to take more shots from beyond the arc.
"I want Wigs shooting six, seven 3s. I want Brandin, I want Moses, I want De'Anthony -- I want to be a high-volume shooting team," Kerr asserted.
This focus on outside shooting is driven by the need to replace the predictable 3-point attempts previously handled by Thompson, who consistently took eight to ten 3-point shots per game. Ensuring a high volume of 3-point attempts will be critical for the Warriors as they seek to maintain their offensive edge.
A New Beginning
Amid the competition and strategic evaluations, there is a palpable sense of renewed energy within the team. Kerr views this season as an opportunity for the Warriors to redefine themselves and establish a new identity.
"This feels like a new beginning for us, whereas last year felt like an extension of who we already were. It gives us a chance to reinvent ourselves a little bit," Kerr said.
While the uncertainty of the roster may pose challenges, Kerr is optimistic about turning it into a source of strength. "It's easier when you know your starting five and you know your first four guys off of the bench. Way easier as a coach knowing that. But we don't have that. So let's turn that into a positive and turn it into competition ... let's establish our identity out of that competition," Kerr emphasized.
As the Warriors navigate through training camp and the preseason, the blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent will be key to their success. The strategic choices made by Kerr and his coaching staff will determine how effectively the team can adapt and thrive in the ever-competitive NBA landscape.
