A New Chapter Begins for Derrick White
As Derrick White took to the practice courts on Sunday, it became evident that he was embarking on yet another unexpected chapter in his remarkable basketball journey. Arriving at 2:30 a.m. after a grueling flight from the U.S., White was immediately thrust into the spotlight, called up to replace the injured Kawhi Leonard for Team USA.
Initially, White had other plans. He was looking forward to a relaxing family vacation in Cabo, far removed from the courts and the constant demands of professional basketball. Yet, in a twist of fate reminiscent of his 2019 experience, where he secured a last-minute spot on the World Cup team in China, White answered the call of duty once again. Back then, his rapid ascent from the Select Team to the senior squad was propelled by the withdrawals of higher-profile guards such as De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young.
This latest call-up found White in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, where he was involved in his annual basketball camp. Just recently, he had agreed to a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics, a testament to his significant contributions on the court. His defensive versatility and high-impact plays were instrumental in the Celtics' NBA title triumph last month, a career pinnacle for White.
Team USA Reunion
Returning to Team USA also means reuniting with some familiar faces. White will rejoin his Celtics teammates Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum, along with former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy, who now serves as an assistant coach for the national team. Forward Kevin Durant, however, will miss Monday’s exhibition game against Australia due to a strained calf that is still under rehabilitation.
Coach Steve Kerr provided an update on Durant's condition, noting that he did not participate in contact drills but instead focused on shooting and rehabilitation exercises. Meanwhile, White's defensive acumen, combined with his recent championship experience and adaptability, make him an invaluable asset for the team.
White himself reflected on his journey, noting the familiar yet invigorating feeling of transitioning from one team to another under such circumstances. "It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team, and I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable. I feel (now) like I did back then, and I'm just excited to be here," White said.
Championship DNA
Jayson Tatum echoed the excitement of having White join the team, emphasizing the championship mentality he brings. "I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team," Tatum remarked.
Indeed, White's journey is a testament to resilience and seizing opportunities. From an unexpected call-up in 2019 to a crucial role in Team USA's current campaign, his story continues to inspire. As Team USA looks to consolidate its roster in preparation for upcoming competitions, White's presence is not just about depth but also about the intangibles that drive teams to greatness.
For Derrick White, this isn't merely another assignment; it is a continuation of a journey marked by perseverance, adaptability, and an unyielding desire to contribute at the highest levels of the sport. As he steps onto the court with Team USA once again, he brings with him experience, skill, and an indomitable spirit ready to face every challenge head-on.
